Intellectual Property - what's your strategy?

When you have a novel idea, one of the most common concerns is 'how do I protect it?', the most important thing to do when answering the question is to take into account, not only which protection is best, a patent, a registered design, copyright, but how does this protection fits in with your business plan. Consideration should be given to your:
  • Budget, what proportion should go to IP and when?
  • Technical development, what might change and when?
  • Target market, size, competitors, price point
  • Marketing strategy, what are your USP's and how sophisicated are your clients?
  • Prior art, has this or anything similar been done before?
  • Exploitation, how and when your IP might generate revenue?
NeQstep can help you build a IP Strategy for your idea, or a complete Commercialisation Programme.

You may prefer to give it try yourself, and you will probably need to take advice on a number of topics but don't forget that you might be the only one looking at the big picture.

For example, most patent attorneys will only be able to provide advice on patent law and will not consider the commercial viability or prospects of your IP. Your first stop might be the UK Intellectual Property Office website which provides detailed advice on patents, trade marks, registered designs, copyright and other protection.

You might also speak with Business Link or if you're based in the South East, your local Enterprise Hub who offer support on this topic.

It may also be prudent to contact a solicitor to discuss your options, NeQstep work with a number of local patent and trademark attorneys who would be happy to help you including: Justine at Bioscience Patents in Ticehurst, Kit at Patents Plan in East Witterings and Mike Hutchins of MR Hutchins in Tunbridge Wells.

Does your Company have an IP Strategy?

It's not just the inventors and entrepreneurs who have IP, every business will own some form and as a company, the process of generating, exploiting and protecting IP can involve everyone. Encouraging innovation in the workplace can be extremely rewarding, not only in the resulting ideas but also by helping your staff feel like valuable members of a dynamic team.
