Case Studies

Our list of case studies continues to grow, and we hope you will find this selection of interest.

Heat Pipe based Heat Exchanger for Refrigeration Applications

In collaboration with Dr Hussam Jouhara, PhD, MIEI, MIOR, a lecturer of Thermal Engineering at Brunel University and Paul Moseley, MIOR, Technical Manager of Coolers & Condensers Limited, NeQstep are working on the development and exploitation of a novel technique using a heat pipe based heat exchanger which will allow the supply of a factory set primary refrigeration loop, reducing the inefficiencies often generated by the mis-matching of components and erroneous commissioning.

Funding awarded to the project by SIRAC (Sustainable Innovation in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning) has already enabled us to start work on production of a model, system design, early market analysis, IPR protection and a KTP application.

Freestreme Body Armour

The development and commercialisation of a sports body armour based on one of Nick Coates patents, filed in March 2005 - take a look at the Freestreme website for more information on this product. To date, we have raised grant funding; commissioned a market survey carried out by Market Evolution; carried out product development and testing; researched standards with British Standards Institute (BSI), International Standards Organization (ISO) and the European Committee of Standardization (CEN). Currently, we are looking to identify the most efficient manufacturing and styling processes, as well as building a number of prototypes for testing in the field with Ice Hockey players in the USA and Canada.

Air conditioning for underground trains

Working on a project to research and develop a new approach in air conditioning for underground trains. NeQstep have been providing engineering consultancy and project management for the project which has included management of the procurement and build of the a prototype unit for testing, as well as completion of the strict quality control required for a project of this nature.

Coolstreme

Working with Professor Graeme Maidment of London South Bank University on a feasibility study for a super-conductive shelf for supermarket chillers which would significantly reduce their energy usage. We identified a manufacturing process, raised grant funding, built ten prototypes, wrote a business plan and attracted the interest of the countries largest food retailer.

Our pre-NeQstep projects include:-

Reactor (Reality Cube)

Working for the worlds largest dedicated immersive visual display provider, Nick developed the zero gap corner design for reality cube type virtual environment and was responsible for the installation of the displays in the Hellenic Centre, Athens. Further units were installed at Salford University and UCL London.

Ultra-wide field of view Head Mounted Display

A Head Mounted Display for automative simulation with an outstanding, lightweight combination of wide field of view and balance - developed for a European collaboration led by Renault. Nicks paper, 'A Head Mounted Display for Simulation and Visualisation' was published in SID (Society for Information Diplays) Digest in 2003.

Digital Projection System

Development of a projector for simulation with an ultra high contrast ratio in excess of 100,000:1. This was a key factor in SEOS Limited winning a highly contested contract to provide simulation displays for a major US program.

Facilities Management for Andrew Reeves Property Group

Over 7 years with the Andrew Reeves Property Group, Chrissi managed the installation of accounting systems managing clients' property assets worth over £200 million; sourced and refurbished offices for the launch of Estate Agency across Kent and in Central London; and managed IT across the group including implementation of first email and internet services and later introduction of computer networking and VPN linking four offices.

Marketing & Product Launches with the Andrew Reeves Property Group

Including ARLA's Buy-to-Let scheme which brought £4 billion of investment into the UK Private Rented Sector between 1996 and 2000; and the UK's first opportunities to invest in residential property without becoming a landlord and via SIPPs.

Human Powered Aircraft

As a project during his BSc Honours (First class) Engineering Product Design at London South Bank University, Nick designed a radical human powered aircraft which won the Royal Aeronautical Society prize in 1998. Insight gained during this project into aerodynamics, lightweight structures and polymer foams contributed to the development of subsequent projects.

Flight Training International Limited

As Managing Director Nick set-up, funded and ran Flight Training International. The company introduced a new kind of private pilot training course which took advantage of the stable weather conditions in the South of France to allow the delivery of an intensive training program leading to a Private Pilots Licence in two to three weeks.
Flight Training International trained over 100 pilots to PPL standard in its first year of operation, more than any other flying school at the time.
